I thought tbat was a black cow with a dumbed down name until I learned the difference later.

My memories are Spam (loved it), fish sticks, scrambled eggs EVERY morning until I couldn't stand it any more (to this day I get sick of foods I eat too often and stop eating them for years). Perfectly carved turkey and perfect gravy on Thanksgiving and Xmas. Tuna potato-chip casserole made with Campbell's mushroom soup that Mom learned from her family. I hope I still have the recipe because it was marvellous.

Unfortunately my mother never taught me to cook and I suck at it and hate to do it. I wish, oh, how I wish she had taught me.Echohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00800007299375673509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042586512666581047.post-30646506363763351332012-06-12T15:29:34.134-05:002012-06-12T15:29:34.134-05:00Wow, your Black Cow story is my story, only six ki...Wow, your Black Cow story is my story, only six kids! I remember Jay's chips, Friday fish sticks, veggies from the garden, lots of rhubarb and many, many casseroles, oh yeah, and porcupine balls (meatballs rolled in rice). In the summer us kids feasted on mullberries and on our elderly neighbors grapes, gooseberries and currants, with permission of course. Kids had good manners back then and you used them!! I lived in Bensenville, IL as a child before alot of it was demolished for the airport expansion. Mostly happy memories :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042586512666581047.post-66406488890489537552011-03-09T06:56:17.192-06:002011-03-09T06:56:17.192-06:00What a cool post, Peg! I love hearing your memories from life being part of a family with 7 kids - wow. Really great story. (I vote for Root Beer Floats for our next cellar gathering. What do you think???)Leannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17800466894354194636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042586512666581047.post-16094521231849046742011-03-04T21:09:03.293-06:002011-03-04T21:09:03.293-06:00Ummm, I wasn't a fan of Black Cow or Root Beer...Ummm, I wasn't a fan of Black Cow or Root Beer floats. However, a treat that my grandmother would make was vanilla ice cream, a scoop of ovaltine, ice and she'd put it in a blender and mix it up. Then she would put it in a metal cup that kept it very cold and we'd drink it with a straw. It was very good...Tracyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12795817810030681267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042586512666581047.post-42459037163271682542011-03-04T05:49:07.223-06:002011-03-04T05:49:07.223-06:00I love this post. One of my not-so-fond memories is for a beef and mushroom soup caserole that was inexpensive to make, and that we all hated, but never had the heart to tell my mom. We all finally fessed up when we were adults, and my mom was absolutely SHOCKED that everyone hated the caserole.Laurahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06598033858132881398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042586512666581047.post-66546064187928061062011-03-03T16:43:48.094-06:002011-03-03T16:43:48.094-06:00Oh, Friday fish sticks!! And who could forget the tomato soup (made with water) with the fish sticks. Wouldn't be able to stomach that today!Peggy Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11931080361170776356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3042586512666581047.post-25892608668438833412011-03-03T09:22:14.968-06:002011-03-03T09:22:14.968-06:00Good memories. Mine include coney island hotdogs, harvesting cucumbers and tomatoes from our backyard garden which I was responsible for turning in the spring and watering all summer. Our treat was a Boston Cooler from DQ. Icecream and ginger ale. Best fresh fruit ever was ripe pears picked from a friends backyard tree. Detested the friday fishsticks...yuck.Billnoreply@blogger.com
